Commission Juncker: Moscovici approved by the European Parliament – The Point

The French Pierre Moscovici has received approval from the European Parliament on Wednesday night to take the portfolios of Economic Affairs in the commission Juncker announced MEPs.

The three committees of Parliament called to decide (economic, internal market and trade) approved the appointment of Mr Moscovici as commissioner by 44 votes against 12, with three abstentions.

It has been deemed fit to ensure the portfolio of Economic Affairs by 32 MPs.

Fifteen voted against and 12 abstained, stating doubts within the European right on the ability of the former French finance minister to judge with impartiality of the state of French finances .

The green light from members to the appointment of former Socialist finance minister was almost certain after that obtained earlier in the evening by the Spanish Miguel Arias Canete conservative for Climate and Energy portfolio.

The EPP group (Conservative) had indeed set fate of Mr Moscovici balanced as Mr. Arias Canete, the center of a controversy to possible conflicts of interest because of its ties to the oil industry.

The European Parliament imposed sanctions on Mr. Moscovici a series of written questions after his three-hour hearing Thursday to clear up any controversy.

MEPs also gave their approval Wednesday to conservative British Jonathan Hill, responsible for Financial Services. They were forced to take an oral upgrading after initial delivery as too vague.

Slovenian liberal Alenka Bratusek selected for the post of vice president of Energy, is the only retoquée have been among the 27 commissioners appointed by Mr. Juncker. Slovenia will propose a new candidate.

The Parliament will vote on the whole Commission during a plenary vote on 22 October.
